Roof leaking right now? First, stay away from any outlet, switch, or light the water is reaching. If you are not sure which circuit it is on, cut the power at the breaker. Then move your things out of the way, set a bucket under the drip, and stay off the roof yourself. Wet and storm-damaged roofing is more dangerous than it looks. First: Is Water Near an Outlet, Switch, or Light?
Check this before anything else. If water is dripping near an outlet, a switch, a ceiling fan, or a light fixture, do not touch it. Go straight to your breaker panel and shut off power to that area. If you are not sure which breaker controls that spot, shut off the main breaker for the whole house until the water source is under control.
This is the one part of a roof leak that is a real safety risk, not just a property-damage one. Everything else on this page can wait a minute while you handle this step first.
Protect the Inside of Your Home
Once the power is safe, slow the damage inside the house.
Move furniture, electronics, and anything valuable away from the drip. Set a bucket, bowl, or bin under the water. Lay towels around it to catch splashing. A bulging or sagging spot on the ceiling means water is pooling above the drywall. Poke a small hole in the center of that bulge, away from you. That lets the trapped water drain into your bucket instead of the ceiling giving out on its own.
Take a few photos of the water stain, the bucket, and any damage while it is happening. Keep them. You may need them for a full roof inspection or an insurance claim later.
Should You Go on the Roof Yourself?
No. Even a roof you know well changes in a storm. Wet shingles are slick. Wind can lift a section you cannot see from the ground. Storm damage may have already weakened the decking under your feet, in a spot you would not know to avoid. Leave the roof itself to someone with the right footing, harness, and experience on wet, damaged surfaces.

Do Temporary Patches (Tarps, Tape, Sealant) Actually Work?
A tarp weighed down over the damaged section, roofing tape over a small crack, or a dab of roofing sealant can slow an active leak down. Used correctly, they are built to hold for a matter of days to a couple of weeks, not a season. They are a bridge to the real fix, not the fix itself, and putting one up still means getting on a wet roof.

When to Call an Emergency Roofer
Once the inside of your home is protected, call. Do not wait until morning or until the rain lets up. The longer water sits in your attic and walls, the more it soaks into insulation, framing, and drywall, and the bigger the eventual repair bill gets.
